This how-to will show you the steps needed to work in brioche stitch! Brioche stitch is super-stretchy and thick, and looks the same on both sides. We are using 6.5mm needles and 2 strands of our Sugar Baby Alpaca yarn in Rusty Orange. Let's get started!

2.

Begin by casting on an even number of stitches. First you will work a set-up row. Slip the first stitch purlwise

3.

Without moving your yarn, insert the needle into the next stitch as if to knit it.

4.

Bring the yarn round the front of the right needle from left to right, around the back of the right needle, and into the middle of the two needles from back to front. Knit the stitch

What you have essentially done here is created a yarn over whilst also knitting the next stitch

Next, bring your yarn back through to the middle of the needles by going around the back of the right needle.

Wrap the yarn anti-clockwise round the back of the right needle, into the middle from back to front. Knit the stitch

Once you have worked your set-up row for Brioche Stitch, you are ready to work the pattern row. This pattern is repeated for every row after the set-up row until you are happy with the length. To begin working the pattern row, make sure that the yarn is at the front of the work, and slip the first stitch purl-wise.

Make sure the yarn is still at the front of the work. Now insert your right-hand needle into the next stitch and the yarn-over stitch as if to knit it, and do a yarn-over as before, bringing the yarn round the front of the right needle from left to right, around the back of the right needle, and into the middle of the two needles from back to front. Knit the two stitches
