Knit one, purl one, and you've got yourself seed stitch, also known as moss stitch in the UK.
Seed stitch (or moss stitch as referred to in the UK), is a really beautiful textured technique that consists of one knit, one purl alternated across an entire row. Then on the next row, you simply continue with one knit and one purl but alternate the order.
Grab your yarn and needles, we're now going to walk you through how to knit the moss / seed stitch. Start by inserting the right needle into the next stitch knit-wise.
Wrap the yarn around the right needle clockwise.
Scoop the needle towards you through the stitch and release the old stitch off the left needle. You should now have one stitch on your right needle.
Bring the yarn between the needles to the front of your work.
Insert the right needle into the next stitch purl-wise. What we mean by purl wise is moving your right needle through the stitch on your left needle from the top downwards.
Wrap the yarn around the right needle anti-clockwise.
Move the needle away from you. Release the old stitch off the left needle. Bring the yarn between the needles towards the back. Repeat these steps, one knit one purl, until you have a single stitch left of your row. Knit this last stitch. When you get to the end of your row, swap the needles around. Then repeat the row again! The trick to the moss / seed stitch is making sure that if your next stitch coming up was a knit stitch during the last row, you then purl. And vice versa. Well done!
