Here we'll walk you through how to cast on using the cable cast on technique, where you actually 'knit on' the stitches (quite different to the long tail cast on)
The cable cast on gives a neat, stable edge to your knitting, and is suitable for most projects - apart from where a stretchy edge is needed.
Let us show you how to cast on using the cable cast on technique. What you need are two knitting needles and some yarn. We have used our rosewood needles and Crazy Sexy Wool.
First, make a slip knot by wrapping the yarn around your fingers, then pull the yarn through the loop and pull tightly. If you need help with the slip knot, we have a tutorial for that too (just use our search box).
This slipknot is your first stitch, place it on your left needle. Make sure this first stitch is not too tight or too loose, you should be able to with ease move it around on the knitting needle.
Insert the right needle into the stitch knit-wise (from underneath - important). Your two knitting needles should form a cross, with the left needle above the right needle.
Wrap the yarn around the right needle clockwise.
Scoop the needle towards you, through the loop on your left needle. Then carefully transfer the stitch that is now on your right needle, onto the left needle (move it over the top of the left needle) and release. There are now two stitches on your left needle.
Tug a bit at the yarn to make sure it's not too tight, the stitches need to be fairly loose at this point.
Insert the needle between the two stitches.
To do so, put the right needle between the two stitches on your left needle. The right needle should sit beneath the left needle, and form a 'cross'.
Wrap the yarn around the right needle once, clockwise.
Scoop the right needle backwards, towards you, through the gap between the two stitches. This can be a little bit tricky, especially if the two stitches on your left needles have been cast on fairly tight. So you may need to do a bit of tugging to get the yarn through. Keep the stitch on the right needle.
You now need to get the stitch on your right needle onto your left needle. Gently transfer this stitch over to the left needle. You should now have 3 stitches on your left needle.
Repeat steps 7 to 10 until you have the number of stitches you need. Congrats, you have now learned how to cast on using the cable cast on method. This will give your cast on edge a nice structure (it won't be too elastic), which is perfect for hats, sweaters and other pieces. Well done!
