Learn the treble crochet technique
A taller version of double crochet using a turning chain of 4 stitches, learn how to work in treble crochet. This is an open stitch, great for summer projects.
In this how-to, we will be showing you how to do treble crochet. This stitch is a taller version of double crochet, and uses a turning chain of four stitches. Today we are using our Shiny Happy Cotton yarn in Vitamin C.
Begin by working the number of chain stitches you need for your foundation row. Then make 4 more chain stitches. These extra 4 stitches are your turning chain. The how-to for chain stitch can be found by searching "chain stitch" in the search bar on the top right of this page :)
Starting with the hook in front of your yarn, move the hook, under and then over the yarn so that the yarn ends up looped around the shaft of the hook.
Repeat step 3 once more, moving the hook, under and then over the yarn so that the yarn ends up looped around the shaft of the hook. You should now have three loops in total over your hook.
Insert your hook into the fifth chain stitch. You now have 4 loops on your crochet hook.
Wrap the yarn around your hook, and pull it through the first 2 loops on the hook. You now have 3 loops on your hook
Wrap the yarn around the hook again, and pull it through the next two loops on the hook. You now have 2 loops on your hook
Finally, wrap the yarn around your hook again, and pull it through the final two loops on the hook. You have now worked your first treble crochet stitch.
Repeat steps 3-8 in each stitch across your row. Your piece should look similar to the image on the left here after working treble crochet across the whole of the foundation chain.
Now it's time to start your next row. Turn your work around, and you are now going to work back across the edge you just finished. Begin by making your turning chain of four stitches.
You will now do the same steps that you did for working across the foundation chain: wrap the yarn around your hook twice so that you have 3 loops on your hook, insert your hook into the 5th stitch, wrap the yarn around the hook, pull the hook through the first 2 loops on the hook, wrap the yarn around the hook and pull through 2 loops on the hook, and finally wrap the yarn around the hook and pull through the final two loops. Repeat this across the row!
Your piece should look similar to the image on the left after you have worked a second row of treble crochet! Keep repeating steps 10-11 for each row to continue working treble crochet across your work
