Step By Step

This how-to will teach you how to crochet the double crochet stitch. Double crochet is a taller version of single crochet. It uses a turning chain of 3 stitches. In this how-to, we will be working into a foundation chain. For the chain stitch how-to, search "chain stitch" in the search box at the top right of this page :)

Start with the hook in your right hand, and the foundation chain in your left.

Move the hook under and then over the yarn

Insert your crochet hook into the middle of the fourth stitch from the hook

Move the hook under and then over the yarn

Scoop up the yarn with the groove of your hook, and pull it through the stitch. There are now three loops on your hook

Loop the yarn around the hook again, and pull the yarn through the first two of the loops on your hook

Loop the yarn around the hook again, and pull the yarn through the remaining two loops on your hook

You have now worked one stitch in double crochet.

To make more double crochet stitches, repeat steps 3 - 8 It will get a bit twisted as you do more, but will flatten out when you work back into it for the next row.

Now here's how to work the double crochet stitch across a row that has already been crocheted: Make a turning chain of 3 stitches

Loop the yarn around the hook, and insert your crochet hook under the next stitch. Insert the crochet hook under the whole stitch, rather than in the middle of the stitch. This will be illustrated in the next image!

You will now complete the stitch as you did before: Move the hook under and then over the yarn. Scoop up the yarn with the groove of your hook, and pull it through the stitch. There are now three loops on your hook. Loop the yarn around the hook again, and pull the yarn through the first two of the loops on your hook. Loop the yarn around the hook again, and pull the yarn through the remaining two loops on your hook. Repeat from steps 12-14 to continue working double crochet across the row!
