In this video we teach you how to work in treble crochet. Treble crochet is a tall stitch and creates an open fabric with lots of drape.
This how-to will show you how to work in treble crochet, which is a tall stitch and creates an open fabric with lots of drape. In this how-to, we have used a 5mm crochet hook and the yarn is Shiny Happy Cotton in Chalk Yellow. Lets get started!
To work in treble crochet, create your foundation chain. For the purpose of this video we chained 20 stitches. Chain an additional 4 stitches, this is your turning chain and you must work this step at the beginning of every row. For the chain stitch how-to, search for "chain stitch" in the search box at the top right of this page!
You’re going to work your first treble crochet stitch into the 5th chain from the hook (remember not to count the loop on your hook!)
Next, move the hook underneath the yarn and then over it to create a loop. Repeat this once again so that you have two new loops on your hook.
Insert your hook into the 5th chain stitch and draw through a loop of yarn – you should now be able to count 4 loops on your hook in total.
Loop the yarn around your hook and bring it through the first 2 loops on your hook, 3 loops remain on the hook.
Loop the yarn around your hook and bring it through the first 2 loops on your hook, 2 loops remain on the hook.
Loop the yarn around your hook and bring it through the remaining 2 loops on your hook, now just 1 stitch remains and you have completed your first treble crochet stitch.
Working into each stitch of the foundation chain in turn, repeat these steps to work a row of treble crochet stitches. You have now completed your first row of treble crochet!
