Here, we have already worked a few rows in single crochet. To work single crochet through the back loop, you begin by making a turning chain of one chain stitch. To do this, take your yarn, wrap it once around the hook, and pull it through the stitch you ended on in the last row

To work through the back loop, rather than putting your hook under the whole of the next stitch as you would normally do in single crochet (illustrated here on the left) ...

Instead, you go through the back of the "v". (Illustrated here on the left) Complete a single crochet stitch by wrapping the yarn once around the hook and pulling it through the first loop. Wrap the yarn around the hook again, and pull through the two remaining loops on the hook.
